WINE: 100 Abades 2012

WINERY: Bodegas Ondalan

DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN: D.O. Ca. La Rioja. Spain.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Graciano

VINE: Own 55 Hectares vineyard facing southeast.

CLIMATE: The Climate has an Atlantic influence, with cold winters, warm summers and long warm autumns. The strong temperature variation between day and night causes slow ripening, which is very suitable for producing polyphenols, developing aromas, and giving the wines their characteristic quality.

SOIL: The vineyard is located in the village Oion (La Rioja), and the soil is calcareous and clay with a bigger percentage of rocks, this is a very poor soil, that gives the best grapes of this variety.

WINEMAKING: The elaboration is made in the stainless steel tanks, and then store in cement tanks to facilitate the natural decanting of the wines and preserve a cool temperature with the least thermal variations. After this process the wine remains in 20% American and 80% French oak barrels for a period of 15 months.

AGEING: 15 months in new 20% American and 80% French oak barrels.

HARVEST: Hand-harvested in 17 kg. cases in the third week of October.

2012 VINTAGE: The Control Board of the Rioja Designation of Origin gave the 2012 Rioja vintage the official rating of “VERY GOOD”. Besides the summer drought, the late September rain had a very positive impact on ripening with great balance between alcohol content and polyphenols, leading to wines of superb quality particulary suited for ageing in barrels and laying down for a long time.

PRODUCTION: 50.000 bottles.

ANALYSIS:

Alcohol: 13.5% vol. pH: 3.3 Total Acidity: 6.5 g/L TH2

Volatile Acidity: 0.5 g/L AcH Total Sulfur: 23 mg/l Residual Sugar: 2.3 g/L

TASTING NOTES: Very high aromatic intensity. Black fruits and spices (pepper). Second layer of dark chocolate notes. With evolution in the wine glass it gets a complexity towards the spiced character (clove, juniper, berries…). In mouth it´s vibrant with good acidity, body and structure. Long and persistent with a final hint of spiced pepper and juniper berries.

Drink now through 2020.
